Get to know our program

Hours of instruction:
  • 4 weeks – 16 days to get certified
  • Classroom instruction, including testing 50 hours
  • Field instruction 50 hours
  • Highway behind-the-wheel training 20 hours
  • Observation (highway behind-the-wheel) 40 hours Total – 160 hours
 
Training Schedule:
  • Full time: 4 weeks – Monday-Thursday 7am-6pm
  • Part time: 10 weeks (Charlotte location only) Monday-Thursday 6pm-10pm
  • Part time: 10 weeks (Indian Trail location only) Friday-Saturday 8am-5pm
 
Content of classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction:
  • Laws relating to interstate and intrastate operations;
  • Pre-trip inspection;
  • Coupling and uncoupling of combination units, if the equipment to be driven includes such units;
  • Placing the vehicle in operation;
  • Use of the vehicle’s controls and emergency equipment
  • Operation in inner-city and interstate highway traffic and passing;
  • Turning the vehicle;
  • Braking and slowing the vehicle by means other than applying the brakes;
  • Backing and parking the vehicle;
  • Experience operating property hauling vehicles with a minimum gross vehicle weight of 49,000 pounds or experience operating passenger motor coach vehicles having a minimum capacity of 46 persons; and
  • Completing Driver’s Daily Log books.
